Piaçava Coconut

2020 has been a major example of how we, as human beings, need to rethink our relationship between ourselves, animals and planet. Furthermore, it is fundamental that we develop an economy not only based in profit, but also in the quality of life of the human being and the nature. This type of development, where the human being is the center of the economic chain is called sustainable economy.

The “extrativismo positivo” of the Piaçava Palm Tree in south Bahia (Brazil) is a powerful example of how to create in an environment sustainable economy. It is only with “extrativismo positive” that it is possible to extract raw material from the Atlantic Rain Forest, nowadays only 7% of its original length still stands, without destroying it.

From the Piaçava Palm it is possible to extract its fibers, used in the production of brooms, cordages, brushes, house ceilings and even automotive seat fillings. From its fruits is possible to produce flour, porridge and milk. The Piaçava coconut is used to produce objects such as buttons, cane fist and design accessories.

Inspired by this rich natural raw material, for more than 30 years the plastic artist Carla de Carvalho has being using Piaçava Palm Tree raw materials in her art pieces. However, in 2012 she founded Atitocou with her daughter Maíra, and since then they produce contemporary jewel pieces from the union of the Piaçava coconut, recycled paper and certified recycled silver.

With this unique imprint, Atitocou is more than a jewelry brand, it is a source of inspiration. The brand is living proof that is possible develop a fashion economy that goes beyond profit by being sustainable and extremally creative!
